Senior Federation closes – Finds homes for programs

The Minnesota Senior Federation has discontinued operations due to financial reasons.  However, they arranged for other organizations to continue their programs.  In their announcement they said:

Senior FederationThe Board of Directors, leadership and staff of the Minnesota Senior Federation thank you for your support over the 37 years we have tried to serve the senior community of Minnesota. It is, indeed, a very sad time for all of us as we see the Minnesota Senior Federation being closed due to the economic downturn. The Board of Directors had worked very hard with the Management Assistance Project for Nonprofits to try to find alternatives to dissolution but, in the end, has recommended to the membership that the Minnesota Senior Federation be dissolved.

At the same time, there is cause for rejoicing here. Over the last few weeks, members of the Board and other volunteers and staff have worked hard to preserve the most vital work of the Minnesota Senior Federation. In just the last few days, these efforts have come to fruition. We hope you will be proud of how your support has helped assure the continuation of vital services for our senior community. We also ask you to help us spread the word on the resolution of these programs.

Senior Partners Care: A huge number of Minnesota seniors depend on the Senior Partners Care program to receive their medical care. Many lost sleep as they feared the loss of these services. Volunteers of America / Minnesota has now committed to continue the administration of this vital program. JoAnne Flacksbarth, who has coordinated this program for several years, will stay with the program for the next several months to help with the transition. She expects the program to move to VOA/MN’s offices by July 1. For now, however, JoAnne continues the administration from the Minnesota Senior Federation offices and current and potential participants in Senior Partners Care can contact her here at 651-783-5030. JoAnne and VOA/MN will notify all participants as to the new location and contact information and when to start using it. Most important for the participants right now is that they can continue receiving their medical care as they have been from the same providers with no interruption.

Health Care Choices for Minnesotans on Medicare: This annual guide to Medicare supplement options and the whole array of options for getting health care has been an important resource not only to the senior community but also to professionals who help seniors navigate the health care maze. The Minnesota Board on Aging has committed to taking over publication of this guide. Karin Patrick is now working to assure a successful transfer to the Minnesota Board on Aging of the extensive data files needed to prepare this publication.

Prescription Drug Programs: The Senior Rx Care pharmacies have committed to continue the Minnesota Senior Federation pricing for those using these prescription drug programs. While the advent of Medicare Part D lessened interest in these alternative programs, many still find them to be the best solution to their prescription needs. We have had testimony that certain prescriptions are available at half the best price in any local pharmacy. Those wishing to sign up to use these programs, submit new prescriptions or request refills should contact Senior Rx Care directly at 1-877-828-7555.

HealthPartners dental insurance: Coverage will continue for those enrolled in the HealthPartners/Minnesota Senior Federation dental insurance program. If and when the Minnesota Senior Federation is dissolved, they will no longer receive the 10% Minnesota Senior Federation group discount on their premium but will have the option to continue the insurance at the regular HealthPartners rates. They can expect to hear from HealthPartners when any changes take effect. Further questions about the HealthPartners/Minnesota Senior Federation dental insurance program should be addressed to HealthPartners at 1-877-838-4949.

The Upper Midwest Pension Rights Project: The Upper Midwest Pension Rights Project will continue to operate under the auspices of the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. The UMPRP continues to serve its current clients and is accepting new clients. Final location of its offices is still being determined, but they can be contacted by calling 651-783-5021 or toll free 1-866-783-5021.

AAA membership and insurance discounts: AAA and the Group Agency, Inc., have agreed to continue the Minnesota Senior Federation group discount program for AAA memberships and auto, homeowners and renters insurance. They will accept new members to the program through December 31, 2009 and continue the group discounts for those in the program at that time. For assistance with the AAA group discount call the Group Agency at 651-766-7867 or toll free at 1-888-765-2554.
